Do you dream of skating your way to an Olympic medal? Or looking for a sport that will keep you physically fit throughout the years? Skating is one of the world's greatest sports! The Aerodrome Learn to Skate Program is fun, challenging and rewarding. Regardless of age, it is a great sport for everyone... Preschoolers, youth, teens, adults, and seniors Whether your goal is to aim for the Olympics, learn to skate backwards, improve your overall fitness, impress your friends, or just to have fun on the ice, you can find it at The Aerodrome!

The Aerodrome is delighted to offer the US Figure Skating Basic Skills Program for all our Learn to Skate Programs.

The Aerodrome has specific programs for all beginners.

Benefits

All our Learn to Skate participants receive the following benefits:

Beginner Under 5's

We call them Snowplow Sams

Does your child dream of becoming an elegant figure skater, or a courageous hockey player? It all begins here for our pre-schoolers! Every wanabe skater, regardless of discipline, needs to understand the fundamentals of ice skating. Aerodrome uses a special program, under the umbrella of the US Figure Skating Association, which has been developed with our pre-schoolers in mind!

The Program is called SNOWPLOW SAM and consists of 3 levels. Children in these classes learn the fundamentals of skating including gliding, stops, swizzles, wiggles and backward skating in a fun environment. Games and toys are also used to encourage and promote confidence!

Upon completion of SNOWPLOW SAM 3 skaters can enroll in BASIC 1

Beginner Hockey

It is essential that all hockey players first have a good understanding of basic skating skills. The Figure Skating coaches are the expert at teaching the basic skating skills and therefore we insist that all our young hockey players first enroll in the Aerodrome Learn to Skate Program. Dependant on age these are the classes we recommend:

  • Under 5 years old (must be potty Trained)
SNOWPLOW SAM CLASS
  • Age five and above
BASIC 1 CLASS

We recommend that all beginners use figure skates to start skating because they are easier for the beginner to handle. Once the skater has passed Basic 1 the skater will be moved to Hockey 1.

Beginner Skaters Age 5 -15

Skaters in this age group enroll in Aerodrome Learn to Skate Program at the Basic I level. Skaters will learn the basics of skating which include skating forwards & backwards, gliding, and stopping. Skaters are continually accessed; therefore, as soon as they are competent at these maneuvers the class coach will move them to Basic 2.

Beginner Adults

This class is specifically designed for Adults over the age of 15 years. The classes take place on Thursday Evening, Friday Morning and Saturday afternoon. As with all Learn to Skate Programs skaters will have the opportunity to use the free 30 minute practice session! Adult learners are special and sometime need that extra encouragement to get over their fear of falling……Our coaches understand!!!

What to Wear

In order to insure your child’s figure skating class experience is the most fun and efficient, it is necessary to dress him/her appropriately. Clothing worn while figure skating should allow for adequate movement and stretching of the body while keeping the skater warm. Long athletic pants and sweatshirts or jackets are appropriate. Mittens and hats are recommended as well!

If you would like to purchase a figure skating dress or skirt for your child, please feel free to do so. We recommend two pairs of tights and a fleece skating jacket to keep warm while being fashionable. The Aerodrome Pro-Shop also offers boys figure skating attire. Most of these items can be found reasonably priced in our Pro-Shop.

While rental skates are available for use, you may want to consider purchasing skates for your child. As professionally fitted skates will be of higher quality and more comfortable, your child may progress at a faster pace. Please feel free to stop in our Pro-Shop and take a look at our merchandise at your convenience.

Questions?

What's after the Basics?

As your child progresses through the Aerodrome’s remarkable figure skating classes, you may find yourself asking, “What comes after this?” The wonderful world of figure skating only begins with our introductory learn to skate classes. As your child passes the 8 Basic levels, and ventures into the Freeskate levels, a new world of opportunity awaits them! They may then try out for our Junior Blades program. This program offers a well rounded training opportunity for skaters who wish to progress more fluently through the elements. The program incorporates off- ice conditioning, Power Classes, as well as element rotations on-ice. Beyond Junior Blades, we also offer Senior Blades and Diamond Blades.

In addition, the Aerodrome offers two annual ice shows. The first show typically takes place during the summer months, and the second show takes place during the holiday season in December. All ages and levels are welcome to participate. Rest assured despite your child’s experience and commitment level, we have a program for you!

While group classes are always recommended to help your child excel and make new friends, private lessons can offer them that extra boost sometimes needed to master the difficult maneuvers. You may request private lessons at any level for your skater. As a private lesson skater, your child can be eligible to begin competing and testing.
